Hostel vs Hotel: How to Choose (Quick Guide)

One thing I find myself deciding on almost every trip, but don’t hear talked about much, is whether to book a hostel vs hotel.
For some people, the choice is easy. There are travelers who swear by hostels and won’t stay anywhere else, and others who prefer their own space and stick to hotels.
But if you’re anything like me, you probably fall somewhere in the middle. Sometimes a hostel makes the most sense, and other times a hotel is 100% worth it. It really just depends on the trip.
Both options have their pros and cons, and there are a few key things I always think through before booking. So in this post, I’m breaking down how to decide between a hostel and a hotel, and when each one is actually the better choice!
Hostels
Pros
- More budget-friendly option
- Easy to meet new people
- Social activities can be really fun (hiking, tours, group dinners, etc.)
- Different room types offer flexibility based on comfort levels & budget (dorm-style, all women’s, AC vs non-AC, private rooms)
- Amenities & grounds often have more personality (to give you a more authentic and/or one-of-a-kind experience)
- Most are located in central areas (near major attractions and/or key destinations)
- Perfect for longer trips or more relaxed travel
Cons
- Lack of privacy can take a toll (sharing bathrooms, rooms, AND common spaces can feel like a lot)
- Getting quality sleep can be difficult (snorers, social activities, late arrivals, early risers, etc. can cause disturbances)
- Cleanliness can be hit or miss (some are great, and others…not so much. Always read the reviews!)
- Security concerns (always be mindful, and use lockers for valuables if you can!)
- Can be overwhelming or mentally draining (especially if you have a longer stay and it’s a large or very social hostel)
- A/C is not always guaranteed (depending on where you stay, obviously)
Note: By “AC vs non-AC” I’m simply referring to air conditioning!
When to Choose a Hostel vs Hotel
- You want to meet new people & make connections (especially with like-minded or other solo travelers)
- You’re looking for a more authentic or immersive experience (hostels can be great for connecting with locals, living among them, and supporting their local businesses)
- Location, location, location! (Some hostels are located right on the beach, up in the mountains, or in other really cool places that make the stay worthwhile & have incredible views!)
- You want to save money (especially in locations where there are a lot of tourists)
- You’re just going with the flow! (hostels are great for travel when plans are slow and opportunities are endless)
Hotels
Pros
- You get your privacy and own personal space
- Better sleep quality & recharge time to yourself (and nicer beds!)
- Higher level of cleanliness (most of the time)
- Consistency in knowing what to expect (hotels offer a more predictable experience)
- Nicer amenities (room service, full gyms, concierge, daily cleaning, laundry service, etc.)
- Comfortability & convenience (having a solid home-base to fully unpack and make yourself comfy, guaranteed A/C & heating, etc.)
- More security (generally feels safer with front desk staff, keycard access & door locks, on-site security, restricted elevator use, etc.)
Cons
- More expensive (especially in popular cities, long hotel stays can eat into your budget quickly)
- More isolating, especially traveling solo (hotels tend to be MUCH less social and it can be harder to meet people)
- Lacks the unique travel element (some travelers prefer a more immersive & authentic travel experience, and hotels tend to be rather generic)
- Added costs can add up quick (parking, breakfast, room service charges, resort fees, etc.)
- Larger demographic & less like-minded travelers (hotels cater more towards families, couples, children, groups of friends, etc. and less to solo travelers)
When to Choose a Hotel vs Hostel
- When it’s more convenient for travel (near airports for early/late flights or closer proximity to your destination)
- You’re looking for nicer/cleaner amenities (laundry service, private shower/bathrooms, full service gym, etc.)
- You need a recharge break (sometimes we all need peace & quiet…no judgement here!)
- For shorter trips or stops between layovers (hotels can be great for overnight and 2-3 day trips and still be pretty affordable!)
For me, the hostel vs hotel choice always depends on the type of trip. Sometimes I want the social aspect of a hostel, and other times I just need a quiet hotel to recharge in by myself. Both will always have their pros and cons.
If you’re stuck and don’t know what to choose, just know that you really can’t go wrong. Try both, see what you like, and figure out what fits your travel style best!
