First Time in Oahu? How to Spend 5 Perfect Days in Paradise (2026 Travel Guide)

It’s your first time in Oahu, get ready for the time of your life!
Planning a trip to somewhere you’ve never been before can feel so intimidating, I get it. That’s exactly why I created this 5-day Oahu itinerary, so that you get to experience some of the very best parts of the island without the stress of planning all the details.
From exploring Waikiki and the city to driving along Oahu’s breathtaking east and north shores, this itinerary includes some of the island’s most beautiful scenery, beaches, hikes, restaurants, and unforgettable activities.
And don’t worry, if you see something that doesn’t fit your travel style, that’s totally okay! I included plenty of different options throughout this guide so you can truly make this trip your own!
Overview:
For your first time in Oahu, your home-base will be Waikiki, with day plans throughout the north and east sides of the island.
You will also need to rent a car for this trip, and luckily HNL (Daniel K. Inouye International Airport) has many rental car options to choose from, including Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Budget Car Rental, and SIXT Car Rental. (I’ve personally rented from Enterprise and Budget, and both are great & reliable options!!)
This itinerary includes 2 travel days and 3 full days in Oahu, and each day (except for arrival & departure day) is broken down into three main components: morning, afternoon, and night.
For each day, you’ll also see a “Suggested Timeframe” and that’s included to help guide you and make sure you stay on track to do all the things. However, this is only a suggestion, so feel free to make adjustments as need be! Remember this is your trip and you deserve to have the best time!
Okay enough jabbering, let’s get into it! 🙂
Day 1: Arrival — Honolulu, HI
This day is going to vary depending on your travel schedule.
If you arrive during the day, take some time to unpack and settle in, freshen up if you need to, and run your post-arrival errands. This is your time to do things like:
- Go to the store for necessities (snacks, drinks, supplies, etc.)
- Walk around & get acquainted with the area
- Take note of nearby restaurants, cafes, or shops you want to visit
If you still have time in your day…go relax! Go to the beach, find a place to grab drinks or dinner by the ocean, and enjoy your first night!
nearby Stores:
- Walmart
- Target
- ABC Stores (you can find these on almost any corner in Waikiki)
If you arrive late at night, that’s a bit of a different story (but don’t worry, I’ve been there too!). Do what you need to do (find food, take a shower, go to bed, etc.) and get a restful nights sleep. Then, in the morning, unpack, get yourself situated, and find some time during the day to stop by the store for snacks, necessities, etc.
Day 2:
This is your first full day on the island!
You’re going to wake up early and go on one of the most beautiful hikes in Oahu, followed with a stop to sightsee an incredible view of the ocean. Afterwards, of course, you’re going to get lunch and relax on the beach, and lastly tour an insanely gorgeous botanical garden on your way back to Waikiki. Finally to end the day, you’re going to enjoy dinner at a restaurant of your choosing!
Morning:
Wake up early, grab an early morning snack, and head over to Diamond Head Crater Trailhead (trust me, you don’t want to miss this hike!)
- The perfect way to kick-off your trip with amazing views, but isn’t overly-ambitious
- About ~2 miles (~3.2 km) and takes ~1-2 hours to complete
- Check out this blog post to learn more!
- Suggested timeframe: 7:30 – 9:30 a.m.

After the hike, start working your way east and find a spot to stop for brunch (and coffee, of course!!)
Brunch Recommendations:
- Surf Camp Coffee Niu Valley | Breakfast & Coffee | Menu
- Leahi Health Hawaii Kai | Plant-based | Menu
- Māla Market | Sandwich shop | Menu
- Moena Cafe | Breakfast & Coffee | Menu
- HanaPa’a Market | Seafood | Menu
- Paradise Poke Hawaii – Hawaii Kai | Hawaiian | Menu
After brunch, the next stop is the Spitting Cave!
- This is a really cool, must-see, lookout over the Pacific Ocean!
- Suggested timeframe: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

*Note: The entrance to the Spitting Cave consists of a narrow dirt path that may not be safe/accessible to everyone. Wear proper footwear and be cautious!
If the Spitting Cave is non-accessible to you and still want to experience an incredible lookout view, Lānaʻi Lookout is going to be for you! It’s a similar vibe, but much safer and only ~6 min drive from the Spitting Cave. You literally pull of the highway and can see everything!
Afternoon:
After the caves, Lanikai Beach is the next stop!
- This beach has beautiful views, crystal clear water, and a ton of space so you don’t feel overcrowded
- Suggested timeframe: 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.

If you’re feeling hungry by this point in the day, I’ve got you covered! Here are some options that are perfect for before or after the beach!
Quick food Stops:
- Leilani’s Island Tacos | Taco truck | Info |
- The Sunrise Shack – Kailua | Açaí shop | Menu |
- Kalapawai Market | Deli | Menu

(I personally recommend the Baja Style Fish Tacos from Kalapawai Market, these were the best tacos I’ve ever had!)
And last, but certainly not least, is the Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden!
- The botanical garden is the perfect afternoon activity and the scenery is breathtaking!
- It’s roughly 400-acres of tropical vegetation and a great photo op! (if that’s your sort of thing)
- Very accessible and has public restrooms for visitors
- Tours are completely self-guided
- Suggested timeframe: 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.

When you’re finished, head back to Waikiki to freshen up before dinner.
*Note: If you arrived late the night before, this is the perfect time to stop at the store on your way back to pick up anything you might need!
Night:
Since you were out and about all day, take the night easy and enjoy dinner at one of Waikiki’s ocean-side restaurants.
Restaurant Recommendations:
- Duke’s Waikiki | Seafood | Menu
- (The coconut shrimp & Kimo’s Original Hula Pie are my faves!!)
- Hula Grill Waikiki | Hawaiian | Menu
- Monkeypod Kitchen – Waikiki | Casual | Menu
- Momosan Waikiki | Japanese-inspired | Menu
- Lulu’s Waikiki | Casual | Menu
- (I also recommend the Beachboy Nachos or Pesto Crusted Salmon!)
- Arancino di Mare | Italian | Menu
Day 3:
This is your recharge day!
You’re going to catch up on some sleep, take the morning at your own pace, and then tackle one of Oahu’s most popular waterfall hikes right in Honolulu. Afterwards you have the rest of the day to spend in Waikiki and relax at the beach, explore local shops, eat at cool restaurants, and do whatever you feel like!
Morning:
Take the morning a little bit slower, and when you feel ready, head out for brunch near Mānoa Falls.
a few brunch options:
- Waioli Kitchen & Bake Shop | Brunch | Menu
- Note: Waioli’s adds a 3% training fee to all checks to support its staff. Upon request, they will remove the fee from your check, if you prefer to do so! This disclaimer can be found at the bottom of their menu website page.
- Morning Glass Coffee | Breakfast & Coffee | Menu
- Off the Hook Poke Market | Hawaiian | Menu
- This is more of a lunch vibe, if you’re looking for something other than breakfast!
- Le Crêpe Café | Brunch | Menu

(The acai bowls at Le Crêpe Café are amazing and SO fresh!! I believe I got the “Mana”)
Post brunch, head to Mānoa Falls Trail for a short 1.7-mile waterfall hike!
- This is an easy hike with stunning views and a waterfall at the top
- The trail is all dirt and rocks, and can become very slippery when it rains (which is often!). Be sure to wear proper footwear
- Visit this blog post for more information!
- Suggested timeframe: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Afternoon:
After Mānoa Falls, head back to Waikiki and get changed into your swimsuit because you’re spending the rest of the day at the beach!
Once you have all your beach essentials (don’t forget sunscreen!), it’s time to head down to Waikiki’s main stretch and find some lunch. 🙂
However, for this meal I’m not recommending restaurants because I want you to have fun picking out your own place to try! There are a ton of restaurants, so just bop in to wherever looks good and give it a shot!
After lunch, it’s time to hit the beach!
- Kūhiō Beach is your first option, which is located towards the southern part of Waikiki Bay
- Waikīkī Beach is your other option, and located further up toward the major resorts on the northern side of the bay
- Both beaches run together, so it doesn’t really matter which one you choose (I’ve personally been to both and actually prefer Kūhiō Beach because while it’s busy, it’s not located right underneath the resorts that become ultra crowded)
- Suggested timeframe: 2:30 – 5:00 p.m.

There is also a ton of shopping located within walking distance of the beach, so if that’s your thing, stop by Waikiki Shopping Plaza as well!
Night:
Tonight is your night!
Go out for drinks and enjoy Honolulu’s thriving night-life, or simply settle in early with some snacks and a movie. If you’re struggling to make some decisions, I have inspiration for you!
Dinner Recommendations:
- THAI TACOS @WAIKIKI | Fusion Restaurant | Menu
- Sam’s Kitchen | Hawaiian | Menu
- Steak Shack | Takeout Restaurant | Menu
- ALOHA MELT – Waikiki | Melts & Grilled Cheese | Menu
- Izakaya Harumi | Japanese BBQ | Menu
- GOOFY Cafe & Dine | Organic Hawaiian | Menu
Drinks Recommendations:
- The Beach Bar | Menu
- Mai Tai Bar | Menu
- Island Vintage Wine Bar | Menu
- Surf Bar Waikiki | Menu
- Arnold’s Beach Bar | (Check Google for menu updates)
- Cuckoo Coconuts | (Check Google for menu updates)
Things to do:
- Blue Note Hawaii | Live music, shows, drinks, and dinner | Show calendar
- Maita’i Catamaran | Sunset tours (start at 5:30 p.m.) | Cruise calendar
- The Magical Mystery Show | Magic show | Show calendar
- Rock-A-Hula & Luau | Dinner theater and luau | Booking info
- Watch the sunset | Accessible from any beach | FREE!
- Go for a sunset stroll | FREE!
- People watch in the city (street performers!) | FREE!

Day 4:
Today is your last full day on the island, and you’re making it count!
You’re going to start your day early with an unforgettable activity. This will take up most of your morning, if not all of it, and possibly some of your early afternoon (depending on duration & scheduling). Then, you’re going to get lunch, spend the afternoon at the beach, and hangout all around the North Shore of Oahu. On your way back, you’re going to make a quick stop for a sweet treat at the Dole Plantation. 🙂
Morning:
First item on the agenda, is your big activity of the day!
Here are a few popular options to choose from, and remember all bookings must be completed prior to the trip! (These spots fill up fast and if you wait until the day before, chances are you might lose out.)
#1: Kualoa Ranch Tours
- Kualoa Ranch hosts a wide variety of tours on a daily basis including a UTV Raptor Tour, Ocean Voyage, Horseback Tour, Movie Sites Tour, and so many more!
- Most range from 1.5 – 3 hours long
- Prices vary from $59.95+, click here for more details

#2: CLIMB Works Keana Farms Zipline Tour
- CLIMB Works Keana Farms gives an amazing zipline experience!
- Starting with a UTV ride up to the platforms and ziplining through the farm, you get a truly unique and immersive experience!
- Duration of the tour is ~2.5 hours long
- Pricing is $179.95/per adult, find booking info here
- For more information, click here

#3: GoJump Hawaii Skydiving
- This one is for the adrenaline junkies out there! Skydiving on the island is an INSANE experience (it’s on my bucket list!)
- GoJump Hawaii offers skydiving in various packages, click here to check them out
- Duration may vary depending on group size and weather (best to plan for a minimum of 2 – 3 hours)
- Prices are $199+ per adult, see here for more pricing info
- Note: If for some reason GoJump Hawaii doesn’t have availability on this specific day for you, check out Skydive Hawaii, it’s located right next door and has similar pricing

Afternoon:
Next on the agenda is lunch.
My biggest recommendation is Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. The famous food truck is known for their fresh shrimp plates and garlic rice, it’s incredible! There are two locations located between the areas of each activity:
- If you went to Kualoa Ranch or CLIMB Works Keana Farms — Your Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck location will be at the food truck park in Kahuku
- If you went to GoJump Hawaii or Skydive Hawaii — Your Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck location will be in Haleiwa
*Note: If seafood isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other food trucks and restaurants located near both shrimp trucks, so you’ll definitely still be able to find something that fits your taste buds!

After lunch, head to the beach for your final “rot in the sun” session.
You’re going to head to Sunset Beach Park on the North Shore.
- This beach is well-known in the area for its beautiful scenery, insane ocean view, and is much less crowded than the beaches in Waikiki
- There’s also a walking path parallel to the beach, so if you’re feeling like a stroll, this is a great place to go!
- Suggested timeframe: 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

After the beach, the last stop of the day is a sweet treat at the Dole Plantation!
- The Plantation Grille sells all sorts of Dole Whip desserts, drinks, and dinner menu items!
- The grounds of the plantation are stunning, and a great place to walk around and explore as well
- Suggested timeframe: 4:45 – 5:30 p.m.
- (Keep in mind it closes at 5:30 p.m., so if you plan on making this stop, be sure to arrive before then!)

Night:
This last night is all yours!
Take it all in, enjoy your time, and make the most of it 🙂
Day 5: Departure
This day is going to vary depending on your travel schedule.
If you depart in the morning: Wake up, make sure all of your luggage is packed, and make your way to the airport. 🙁
If you depart later in the day: Find out if your hotel (or whichever accommodations you booked) will store your luggage for the day, and spend your remaining few hours walking the beach, stopping by a coffee shop, or doing some last minute souvenir shopping.
And, if you follow this itinerary, definitely leave a comment below and tell me all about your experience!
Whether you’re spending your days relaxing on the beach, exploring the island, or trying all the amazing local food, I hope this guide helps make your first time in Oahu unforgettable. Safe travels, and enjoy every second of paradise!
